What's to Study? Mifepristone Kills Babies. Isn't That Enough to Stop Its Distribution?

Seven months ago, Dr. Martin Adel Makary remained steadfast in his position that he was going to do nothing about stopping the distribution of the human pesticide, mifepristone, that, no matter the harm that it does to women, both spiritually and physically, is always deadly to a preborn child, although he promised to “study” its possible harm to women.

Seven months later, though, Dr. Martin Adel Makary’s promised review of mifepristone has yet to get underway:

The pro-life lobby is calling on President Trump to fire FDA Commissioner Marty Makary after news broke alleging that the agency is slow walking a long-promised review of the abortion drug mifepristone until after the midterms.

For months Makary and his boss, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have promised lawmakers and state attorney generals that a review is under way. But a new report that Makary is deliberately delaying that effort has angered the anti-abortion base, a key Trump constituency.

The White House denies that allegation. “The study is not being ‘slow walked,’” a senior official told RealClearPolitics. “Comprehensive and exhaustive reviews take time.”

All the same, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley cited the Bloomberg News report and wrote on social media Tuesday morning that “the FDA lied to me and other members of Congress,” before calling on Makary “to stop dithering [and] reinstate the mifepristone safety guardrails. Nothing less is acceptable.”

“It shows they are fundamentally unserious,” one anti-abortion activist told RCP. And now it could create a profound headache for Trump, who often brags that he is “the most pro-life president.”

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, called on Trump to fire Makary after news broke that the FDA had put the effort on the back burner despite multiple promises to Congress.

“Enough is enough: FDA Commissioner Makary should be fired immediately. The FDA is doing nothing while every single day abortion drugs take the lives of children, put women and girls at serious risk, empower abusers and trample state pro-life laws,” Dannenfelser said in a statement calling on Trump to reinstate policy from his first term that required the drug to be dispensed in person.

“Commissioner Makary is severely undermining President Trump and Vice President Vance’s pro-life credentials and their position that states should have the right to enact and enforce pro-life protections,” she concluded. “Makary must go.”

That message was not well received in the White House. For now, Makary remains in Trump’s good graces.

“FDA Commissioner Marty Makary is working diligently to ensure that Americans have the best possible, Gold Standard Science study of mifepristone. The White House maintains the utmost confidence in Commissioner Makary,” Trump spokesman Kush Desai told RCP in a statement, pointing to “one landmark victory for the American people after another” from his crackdown on artificial food ingredients to the first safety review of baby formula in decades.

“Uninformed attacks against Commissioner Makary from individuals outside the administration will not change these facts,” said Desai.

But food dye and baby formula are not the primary concerns of the pro-life lobby. Their focus is instead on mifepristone. Prescriptions of the drug surged after the Supreme Court overturned the national right to an abortion in 2022 and the total number of abortions has increased nationally year after year. Nearly two-thirds of abortions are now carried out using the medication, which is readily available through the mail after the Biden administration reversed rules requiring an in-person doctor visit in order for a patient to receive a prescription.

The FDA continues to publicly state that mifepristone, a drug which is used to stop the development of a pregnancy, is safe, “when used as directed.” Anti-abortion advocates argue that the drug has been overprescribed, and without proper medical supervision can lead to adverse complications like hemorrhaging, sepsis, and even death.

The Trump administration has promised to conduct a review of the abortion pill. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Kennedy told lawmakers that he was open to limiting access to mifepristone citing “safety issues.” Later in September, the HHS secretary said that the review was in progress and accused the Biden administration of politicizing science. “They actually twisted the data to bury one of the safety signals,” Kennedy told Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford. The next month, the FDA made the drug more available by approving a generic version of mifepristone, infuriating Republicans.

A spokesman for HHS, Andrew Nixon, said in a statement at the time that “the FDA has very limited discretion in deciding whether to approve a generic drug. By law, the Secretary of Health and Human Services must approve an application if it demonstrates that the generic drug is identical to the brand-name drug.”

The explanation left Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, flabbergasted. When he was told the FDA was just following the law by approving the generic, Cassidy told reporters in October that he replied, “Hang on, the Biden admin didn’t do it, and you did? We’ve got to obey the law exactly to the nth degree, and Biden didn’t?”

A spokesman for Lankford told RCP that the senator remains focused on the health and safety of mothers and ensuring FDA decisions follow both the law and sound medical standards,” before adding that “delaying that review only underscores why oversight is needed.”

Abortion has receded from the White House policy portfolio. While the administration took a handful of steps to roll back Biden-era policies and limit funding, Trump has not moved to curtail abortion access. Calls to ban the delivery of the abortion drug through the mail, for instance, have fallen on deaf ears in the West Wing. Anti-abortion activists, who remain some of the president’s most loyal supporters, increasingly feel alienated and ignored.

“Our natural inclination is to try to be allies and supportive of the good work they are doing, but they promised this study, but it’s just been crickets since then,” said one anti-abortion activist in regular contact with the White House. “They are putting us in an impossible position.”

The timing is not lost on many in the pro-life lobby who believe that by delaying the release of a study until after the midterms, Trump is trying to punt the issue to avoid political fallout. But a survey by the president’s own pollster, John McLaughlin, shows that 70% of likely voters approve of policies that require a woman to visit a doctor before receiving a prescription for abortion drugs.

“It’s politics over women,” said Brad Kehr, government affairs director for Americans United for Life. “Votes over safety.”

The White House was already asking anti-abortion activists for patience as they scramble to come up with a plan to extend Obamacare subsidies. Activists have demanded that abortion coverage not be included; the administration asked their pro-life supporters to keep quiet as they come up with a compromise. That constituency may be losing patience. For now, their ire is directed toward the FDA.

“If Dr Makary will not act as head of the FDA to protect children and mothers he should be fired,” Lila Rose, president of Live Action wrote on social media. “Under his watch abortion pills kill preborn children and endanger women and the study he promised is nowhere to be found. Ah, but President Donald Trump made promises in 2024 to take no action against the abortion pill and now, as President Donald John Trump, he is keeping them.

Seven long months have passed since United States Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) criticized Makary’s inaction as follows:

Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley criticized Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary for his recent comments about the dangerous abortion pills.

Dr. Makary said he has “no plans to take action” on the abortion drugs during a discussion Thursday at the Semafor World Economic Summit.

However, Semafor reported that the FDA may still act.

“There is an ongoing set of data that is coming into the FDA on mifepristone,” he said. “So if the data suggests something or tells us that there’s a real signal, we can’t promise we’re not going to act on that data.”

“This is exceptionally disappointing to say the least. Not a good beginning at the FDA,” Sen. Hawley wrote in response on X.

Other conservatives were also critical of Makary’s comments.

“The abortion pill is not safe for the mother, or the baby,” Daily Signal correspondent Elizabeth Mitchell wrote on X. “The ER visitation rate for abortion complications appears to have increased since the FDA removed guardrails on the pill.”

During his confirmation hearing last month, Makary pledged a review of abortion pills, vaccines, and food ingredients, as LifeSiteNews previously reported. The Johns Hopkins University surgeon and former editor-in-chief of MedPage Today drew interest from conservatives due to his criticism of lockdown policies during COVID.

On the subject of abortion pills, which new Health & Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says Trump has asked him to study the dangers of, Makary claimed he has “no preconceived plans” but to “take a solid, hard look at the data and to meet with the professional career scientists who have reviewed the data at the FDA, and to build an expert coalition to review the ongoing data which is required to be collected as a part of the REMS [Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy] program.”

Hawley voted to advance Makary’s nomination out of committee following the FDA’s decision to fire an attorney who had defended vaccine mandates and the Biden administration’s decision to loosen safety regulations around abortion pills. Although there has always been evidence that the human pesticide has been unsafe for women, this fact, which is always being buttressed by various studies (see 11% of women who take abortion pill suffer serious adverse events, largest known study finds), is entirely irrelevant to its inherent immorality as the human pesticide is one hundred percent deadly to preborn babies and to the immortal souls of their mothers. That is what matters in the eyes of the true God of Divine Revelation, the Most Holy Trinity, and thus this is what must matter to us as Catholics.

Yet we are now in the thirteenth year since 2000 of a Republican presidential administration where two different and, on many issues, diametrically opposed men, the dunderhead, neoconservative war hawk and profligate spender named George Walker Bush and Donald John “Mutable Will of the People” Trump have refused to reverse the marketing of the human pesticide that was authorized by the United States Food and Drug Administration in the presidency of William Jefferson Blythe Clinton on September 28, 2000.

This is what then Governor of Texas George Walker Bush said in his October 3, 2000, presidential debate with then Vice President Albert Arnold Gore, Jr., in Saint Louis, Missouri:

BUSH: I don't think a president can unilaterally overturn it. The FDA has made its decision.

MODERATOR: That means you wouldn't, through appointments, to the FDA and ask them to --

BUSH: I think once a decision has been made, it's been made unless it's proven to be unsafe to women.

GORE: Jim, the question you asked, if I heard you correctly, was would he support legislation to overturn it. And if I heard the statement day before yesterday, you said you would order -- he said he would order his FDA appointee to review the decision. Now that sounds to me a little bit different. I just think that we ought to support the decision.

BUSH: I said I would make sure that women would be safe who used the drug.  (2000 Debate Transcript) [Droleskey comment: Uh, Mister Former Warmongering, Mass Murdering, Dopey President, the President of the United States of America can make appointments to the Food and Drug Administration who could indeed overturn such a decision by means of an administrative fiat. George Walker Bush’s first Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, a Catholic, did nothing to demand the reversal of the decision made by the FDA during the final few months of his predecessor, Donna Shalala, who is a Maronite Rite Catholic, I would like to remind those with short memories. Tommy Thompson, who had been Governor of Wisconsin from January 5, 1987, to February 1, 2001, thereby helped to institutionalize the human pesticide as an ordinary part of the repertoire of available pills by which innocent preborn babies could be killed.

Here is what Mrs. Judie Brown said when Thompson said in his Senate confirmation hearings that he had heard nothing about the lethal effects of RU-486 (despite the fact that women have died and that the poison pill is absolutely deadly for innocent preborn children:

WASHINGTON, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- "Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson has denied the undeniable, and endorsed a chemical nightmare,"  said Judie Brown, president of American Life League.

On one of the nation's largest television news networks, Thompson said  "nobody has ... said that RU-486 is unsafe" (The Edge with Paula Zahn, FOX  News Channel, 4/17/01).   Thompson's statement is a direct contradiction of his previous promises to investigate the health risks of the RU-486 abortion  regimen, and it also flies in the face of congressional concerns.

Thompson said, "Until somebody calls in and says that it's unsafe or that it's something that has caused problems for -- for women, we will not be reviewing it, just like any other drug.  It's the same as other drugs that  have been approved.  And it has been approved in America, and therefore, until  it's proven or has any suggestion that it's unsafe, it will not be reviewed."

"For the record, Mr. Thompson," said Brown, "RU-486 always kills a preborn person, and FDA documents indicate that the second chemical in the RU-486  abortion regimen has caused cardiac failure, coronary artery occlusion, uterine perforation, uterine rupture, and on and on."  

Brown said RU-486 is a chemical killer. "Mr. Thompson, don't pretend that  you do not know this," she said.  "It is killing innocent preborn children, and it can kill women. Distribution of RU-486 must be halted immediately." (Tommy Thompson Endorses Human Pesticide, RU-486.)

Yes, yes, yes. The "pro-life" George Walker Bush administration. Yes, yes, yes.

This is one of the reasons that my eyes rolled and my blood pressure reached the boiling point at times in the first decade of the current century as sleepy, uninformed Catholics spoke in glowing terms of the “pro-life” Bush administration. George Walker Bush’s administration helped to institutionalize baby-killing just as much as had his predecessor, William Jefferson Blythe Clinton, had done. Those who did not see this during the Bush 43 administration permitted themselves to be lulled to sleep as they lived in fear of the supposedly "greater evil" that lurked always around the corner. Tell me, please, how the supposedly pro-life Catholic, Tommy Thompson was any different than his pro-abortion Catholic predecessor, Donna Shalala?

As far as I can remember—and my memory is still decent on such matters, no “bishop” of the counterfeit church of conciliarism ever upbraided Donna Shalala for her role in presiding over the Food and Drug Administration’s testing of RU-486 in the 1990s or for her decision to approve the FDA’s finding for its marketing on September 28, 2000, and no conciliar “bishop” in this country ever reprimanded Tommy Thompson for his refusal to reverse Shalala’s decision. Many of the American conciliar “bishops” have long, long enabled pro-aborts in the organized crime family of the false opposite of the naturalist “left,” and others among their apostate numbers have long, long provided cover for phony “pro-life” politicians in the organized crime family of the false opposite naturalist “right.”

Yes, baby-killing, whether by chemical or surgical means, has been enabled by the lords of conciliarism in the United States of America and throughout the rest of the world. Whatever “pro-life” rhetoric some of them used in the past was just as empty as that of the politicians with whom they have been aligned. This empty rhetoric—and the lack of sanctions imposed upon pro-abortion public officials—contributed mightily to creating a political and legal environment in which the chemical and surgical killing of the innocent preborn has become such an accepted fact of life that even supposed “pro-life” politicians take refuge in the “impossibility” of changing the law as to do so would to be anger a large number of voters. One can anger God, but one cannot anger voters in our Judeo-Masonic world of naturalism and Modernism. That is what this is all about, good readers.

Moreover, it should be noted that the use of contraception (remember, “Most contraceptives abort, and most contraceptives abort most of the time”—the late Father Paul Marx. O.S.B., founder of Human Life International and Population Research Institute) can lead to infertility as it is never morally nor physically “safe” to defy the laws of God.

Thus, do not be fooled by bread-and-circus, dog-and-pony shows of naturalism as there is no shortcut to a just social order on any kind of naturalistic, ideological, or inter-denominational basis. Catholicism is the one and only basis of a just social order. There can never be a period of prolonged national prosperity or security on the blood of the innocent preborn as each of the other three sins that cry out to Heaven for vengeance (the sin of Sodom, defrauding the widow, withholding the day laborer's wages) are committed under cover of the civil law and celebrately with a ready abandon in what passes for "popular culture" in a decadent society. Anyone who does not believe that this is so is quite foolishly mistaken and self-deceived.

As the Prophet Osee wrote:

Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel, for the Lord shall enter into judgment with the inhabitants of the land: for there is no truth, and there is no mercy, and there is no knowledge of God in the land.  2 Cursing, and lying, and killing, and theft, and adultery have overflowed, and blood hath touched blood.  3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth in it shall languish with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of the air: yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be gathered together. (Osee 4: 1-3.)

Pope Saint Pius X explained that one of the reason men are so gullible and hence, I would contend, to fall for the illusion of secular salvation, is because they are ignorant of the Sacred Deposit of Faith, which is why he exhorted Catholics to institute the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine programs in every Catholic parish and school around the world: 

At this very troublesome and difficult time, the hidden designs of God have conducted Our poor strength to the office of Supreme pastor, to rule the entire flock of Christ. The enemy has, indeed, long been prowling about the fold and attacking it with such subtle cunning that now, more than ever before, the prediction of the Apostle to the elders of the Church of Ephesus seems to be verified: "I know that . . . fierce wolves will get in among you, and will not spare the flock."[1] Those who still are zealous for the glory of God are seeking the causes and reasons for this decline in religion. Coming to a different explanation, each points out, according to his own view, a different plan for the protection and restoration of the kingdom of God on earth. But it seems to Us, Venerable Brethren, that while we should not overlook other considerations, We are forced to agree with those who hold that the chief cause of the present indifference and, as it were, infirmity of soul, and the serious evils that result from it, is to be found above all in ignorance of things divine. This is fully in accord with what God Himself declared through the Prophet Osee: "And there is no knowledge of God in the land. Cursing and lying and killing and theft and adultery have overflowed: and blood hath touched blood. Thereafter shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth in it shall languish."[2]

2. It is a common complaint, unfortunately too well founded, that there are large numbers of Christians in our own time who are entirely ignorant of those truths necessary for salvation. And when we mention Christians, We refer not only to the masses or to those in the lower walks of life - for these find some excuse for their ignorance in the fact that the demands of their harsh employers hardly leave them time to take care of themselves or of their dear ones - but We refer to those especially who do not lack culture or talents and, indeed, are possessed of abundant knowledge regarding things of the world but live rashly and imprudently with regard to religion. It is hard to find words to describe how profound is the darkness in which they are engulfed and, what is most deplorable of all, how tranquilly they repose there. They rarely give thought to God, the Supreme Author and Ruler of all things, or to the teachings of the faith of Christ. They know nothing of the Incarnation of the Word of God, nothing of the perfect restoration of the human race which He accomplished. Grace, the greatest of the helps for attaining eternal things, the Holy Sacrifice and the Sacraments by which we obtain grace, are entirely unknown to them. They have no conception of the malice and baseness of sin; hence they show no anxiety to avoid sin or to renounce it. And so they arrive at life's end in such a condition that, lest all hope of salvation be lost, the priest is obliged to give in the last few moments of life a summary teaching of religion, a time which should be devoted to stimulating the soul to greater love for God. And even this as too often happens only when the dying man is not so sinfully ignorant as to look upon the ministration of the priest as useless, and then calmly faces the fearful passage to eternity without making his peace with God. And so Our Predecessor, Benedict XIV, had just cause to write: "We declare that a great number of those who are condemned to eternal punishment suffer that everlasting calamity because of ignorance of those mysteries of faith which must be known and believed in order to be numbered among the elect."[3]

3. There is then, Venerable Brethren, no reason for wonder that the corruption of morals and depravity of life is already so great, and ever increasingly greater, not only among uncivilized peoples but even in those very nations that are called Christian. The Apostle Paul, writing to the Ephesians, repeatedly admonished them in these words: "But immorality and every uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as become saints; or obscenity or foolish talk."[4] He also places the foundation of holiness and sound morals upon a knowledge of divine things - which holds in check evil desires: "See to it therefore, brethren, that you walk with care: not as unwise but as wise. . . Therefore, do not become foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is."[5] And rightly so. For the will of man retains but little of that divinely implanted love of virtue and righteousness by which it was, as it were, attracted strongly toward the real and not merely apparent good. Disordered by the stain of the first sin, and almost forgetful of God, its Author, it improperly turns every affection to a love of vanity and deceit. This erring will, blinded by its own evil desires, has need therefore of a guide to lead it back to the paths of justice whence it has so unfortunately strayed. The intellect itself is this guide, which need not be sought elsewhere, but is provided by nature itself. It is a guide, though, that, if it lack its companion light, the knowledge of divine things, will be only an instance of the blind leading the blind so that both will fall into the pit. The holy king David, praising God for the light of truth with which He had illumined the intellect, exclaimed: "The light of Thy countenance, O Lord, is signed upon us."[6] Then he described the effect of this light by adding: "Thou hast given gladness in my heart," gladness, that is, which enlarges our heart so that it runs in the way of God's Commandments. The men who control the world today are in the grip of the adversary. They are will filled with vanity and deceit, a deceit which leads the gullible who are looking for salvation in all the wrong places, to follow other human beings who are just as blind to things divine as they are, all with the result that they fall into a pit of deception and error here below as a foretaste of the fiery pit into which they fall when they die if they do not quit their sins, confess them to a true priest, and receive those wonderful words of absolution that pass from the lips of a true priest acting in persona Christi.

Those of us who are blessed to know and to adhere to the truth by means of the graces we receive in the holy sacraments cannot permit ourselves to be duped into wasting our time believing that men who are ignorant of divine things can contribute one little bit to the “betterment” of a nation or the world.

It is really as simple as this: anyone who does not know, love, and trust the August Queen of Heaven, Our Lady, and meditate upon the mysteries of our salvation contained within her Most Holy Rosary is prone to follow anything and everything except her Divine Son as He has revealed Himself to us exclusively through His Catholic Church.

We need to focus on the simple fact that time is short, and that eternity has no end. If we desire to go home to Heaven, we cannot permit ourselves to be deceived by vain who keep trying to convince us that we can advance spiritually in our own lives and/or socially in the world by tolerating this or that evil by convincing ourselves that the evil we tolerate, whether personally or socially, is not as “great” as some other evil or set of evils.

Please, do not fall into the trap of the false opposites of naturalism as to do so is to fall prey into the hands of the adversary himself.

In all the difficulties of these times, though, we must remember that we have nothing to fear as the graces won for us by the shedding of Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and that flow into our hearts and souls through the loving hands of Our Lady, she who is the Mediatrix of All Graces, will be ever sufficient for us to carry whatever crosses in whatever circumstances of whatever time God has from all eternity appointed them to live and to work out their salvation in fear and in trembling.

The following prayers, found in The Raccolta, should fill us with peace in the midst of the difficult times in which we live:

O Mary, powerful mediator, advocate of the human race, full of love for us who are mortal, the life of our hearts, blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, where thou dost nothing else save dispense heaven’s favors upon the afflicted, grant that a ray of thy heavenly light may shine forth to enlighten those many blinded understanding and to enkindle so cold hearts. Intercede with thy Son and obtain grace for all the pagans, Jews, heretics and schismatics in the whole world to receive supernatural light and to enter with joy into the bosom of the true Church. Hear the confident prayer of the Supreme Pontiff [of Holy Church in these times of papal vacancy], that all nations may be joined in the one faith, may know and love Jesus Christ, the blessed fruit of thy womb, who liveth and reigneth with the Father and the Holy Spirit world without end. And then all men shall love thee also, thou who art the salvation of the world, arbiter and dispenser of the treasures of God, and Queen of mercy in the valley of Pompeii. Our Lady is the Co-Redemptrix of the human race.

Our Lady is the Seat of Wisdom.

Our Lady is our Refuge of Sinners.

Our Lady is the Treasurer of all the graces won for us by her Divine Son on the wood of the Holy Cross.

Our Lady is also our Immaculate Queen to whose Immaculate Heart has been entrusted the cause of world peace and the restoration of all things in her Divine Son, Christ the King, something that Pope Pius XII noted in his prayer consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she who is the Queen of Heaven and Earth:

Queen of the most holy Rosary, help of Christians, refuge of the human race, victorious in all the battles of God, we prostrate ourselves in supplication before thy throne, in the sure hope of obtaining mercy and of receiving grace and timely aid in our present calamities, not through any merits of our own on which we do not rely, but only through the immense goodness of thy mother’s Heart. In Thee and in thy Immaculate Heart, at this grave hour of human history, do we put our trust; to thee we consecrate ourselves, not only with all of Holy Church, which is the mystical body of thy Son Jesus, and which is suffering in so many of her members, being persecuted, but also with the whole world, torn by discords, agitated with the hatred, the victim of its own iniquities. Be thou moved by the sight of such material and moral degradation, such sorrows, such anguish, so many tormented souls in danger of eternal loss! Do thou, O Mother of mercy, obtain for us from God a Christ-like reconciliation of the nations, as well as those graces which can convert the souls of men in an instant, those graces which prepare the way and make certain the long desired coming of peace on earth. The restoration of all things in Christ, a restoration that will include China, of course, will occur as a result of the fulfillment of her Fatima Message after the restoration of a true pope on the Throne of Saint Peter, which will occur miraculously at a time of God’s choosing. All we have to do is persist in our prayers as we maintain a joy-filled hope that we might, by virtue of the graces Our Lady sends to us, be able to plant a few seeds for the restoration of all things in Christ the King as a result of the Triumph of her own Immaculate Heart.
